Every mom has had that moment, the quiet pause between client calls, laundry piles, and dinner plans, where she realizes something feels off. You’re doing all the things you’re supposed to do, but you’re exhausted, uninspired, or simply out of balance.

If this sounds familiar, you’re not alone. In fact, you might just be standing at the doorway between breakdown and breakthrough.

On The CPA MOMS Podcast, founder Mayumi Young shared a framework that helps women identify exactly where they are and how to shift toward alignment and joy. It’s called The Four F’s, and it’s a roadmap to rebuild your life from the inside out.

Why “Breakdowns” Aren’t a Bad Thing

Before diving into the framework, it’s important to understand one simple truth: a breakdown isn’t failure. It’s feedback.

Breakdowns are signals, your body, mind, or circumstances telling you that something is no longer working. Maybe your firm is thriving financially but your health is suffering. Maybe you’re excelling as a mom but your career feels stagnant. Maybe you’ve achieved success on paper, yet feel empty inside.

The good news? That awareness is the first step toward a breakthrough.

When you know something’s out of alignment, you can finally do something about it. That’s where the Four F’s come in.

The Four F’s Framework

The Four F’s help you look at your life through a simple but powerful lens:

  1. Financial – Your relationship with money, income, savings, and personal wealth.
  2. Fitness – Your physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual well-being.
  3. Firm – The work you do, whether in your own practice, a company, or as a student.
  4. Family and Fun – The quality of your relationships and the joy you allow yourself to experience.

Each area is rated on a scale from 1 to 25. Add them up, and you’ll get a score from 4 to 100.

  • 80–100: You’re living in alignment. Celebrate it and maintain it.
  • 50–79: You’re doing okay, but there’s room for growth.
  • Below 50: It’s time to take action and reclaim your life.

This isn’t about judgment or perfection. It’s about awareness.

Step 1: Identify the “Heaviest Brick”

Mayumi describes each F as a brick you’re carrying in your backpack. Some bricks are lighter, some are heavier, but you feel the total weight every day.

The first step to resetting your life is to identify your heaviest brick, the area that’s causing you the most pain, stress, or dissatisfaction.

Maybe your financial situation keeps you up at night. Maybe your fitness has been neglected because you’re always caring for others. Or maybe your firm drains your energy, and you secretly wish you could start fresh.

You don’t need to fix everything at once. Start by lightening the heaviest brick first.

Step 2: Declare a “State of Emergency”

If your total score is below 50, Mayumi recommends declaring a state of emergency.

That doesn’t mean panic. It means urgency with purpose. It’s your way of saying, “Something has to change, and I’m willing to take control.”

Imagine a fire alarm going off in your life, loud enough to make you stop, pay attention, and act. That’s the level of commitment this moment deserves. Because your time, energy, and happiness are worth saving.

You only get one life. Why settle for surviving when you can redesign it to thrive?

Step 3: Create a 90-Day Breakthrough Plan

Once you know which area needs attention, set a 90-day goal to raise your score.

Here’s how:

  • Choose one focus area from the Four F’s.
  • Define what “better” looks like. Be specific.
  • Create small, measurable steps that move you closer to that goal.
  • Track your progress weekly. Celebrate small wins.

Example: If your lowest score is in Fitness, your 90-day plan might include walking 20 minutes a day, scheduling a checkup, or adding a mindfulness routine before bed.

Small steps lead to massive change when you stay consistent.

Step 4: Speak Kindly to Yourself

As you begin this process, notice your inner dialogue. Are you being harsh or judgmental? Do you criticize yourself for being “behind”?

Mayumi reminds us to treat ourselves with the same compassion we would give a child. Growth happens when you create safety, not shame.

Every score, every reflection, every imperfect moment is a data point, not a verdict. Use it to learn, not to label yourself.

Step 5: Remember Why It Matters

At the heart of this framework is a powerful truth: your life is happening now.

Don’t wait for the perfect time, more money, or fewer responsibilities. This is the moment to realign your life so you can actually enjoy what you’re building.

Mayumi shared the story of her mother, now in her late 80s, and how realizing she might only have “40 more times” to see her reminded her to live fully now. Every relationship, every laugh, every connection counts.

When you use the Four F’s to reset your life, you’re not just improving your business or your body. You’re reclaiming your time, your joy, and your purpose.

From Breakdown to Breakthrough

Your breakdown moment can be the most important turning point of your life. It’s the moment you choose awareness over autopilot, courage over comfort, and intentional living over survival.

You can have a thriving firm, strong finances, a healthy body, and a connected family. You can feel proud of what you’re building without losing yourself in the process.

Start by asking:

  • What’s my current score?
  • Which area needs my love and attention first?
  • What will my life feel like when I raise that score?

Then take one small, powerful step toward that vision today.

You deserve a life that works for you, not against you.
