Some conversations are too important to only share once. This week, we’re revisiting a powerful CPA MOMS Podcast episode featuring Nikki Bushaw, a CPA, entrepreneur, and mom who chose to build her career on her own terms.

Her story is a reminder that the path you thought you were “supposed” to take isn’t always the one that will fulfill you, especially after becoming a mom.

From Traditional Path to Personal Freedom

Like many accountants, Nikki originally planned to follow the traditional route: work at a firm, climb the ladder, and eventually become a partner. But after having children, her priorities shifted.

She realized that what she truly wanted wasn’t just career success, it was flexibility and control over her time.

So she made a bold decision. When her son was just three months old, she left her firm and started her own practice.

That decision wasn’t just about work. It was about designing a life that aligned with her values.

The Mindset Shift That Changes Everything

One of the most powerful lessons Nikki shared is that entrepreneurship is less about technical skills and more about mindset.

She openly talks about imposter syndrome, comparison, and the constant questioning that can creep in when you’re building something on your own.

Her biggest shift?

Realizing that there’s no one else to blame, and no one else to be.

You have to step fully into who you are and trust that your unique way of doing things is enough.

When she stopped trying to be like everyone else and started doing things “Nikki’s way,” everything changed, from her stress levels to the clients she attracted.

Redefining Success Beyond the Numbers

In the beginning, success looked like revenue, metrics, and growth.

But over time, Nikki realized that those numbers weren’t the full picture.

Today, success for her includes:

  • Strong, authentic relationships with clients and her team

  • A business that aligns with her purpose

  • The ability to be present with her family

She still tracks financial metrics, but they’re no longer the only measure of success.

Because at the end of the day, it’s the relationships and the life you build that matter most.

Creating Work-Life Harmony (Not Balance)

Nikki also shared a powerful perspective on work-life harmony.

For her, it’s not about perfectly splitting time between work and family. It’s about being intentional.

She schedules time with her kids, her husband, and even herself, just like she would any client meeting.

Whether it’s 20 minutes of quiet time, playing outside with her kids, or connecting with friends, those moments are essential, not optional.

Because when one side of life gets too heavy, everything else starts to feel off.

You Already Have What It Takes

If there’s one message Nikki wants every woman in accounting to remember, it’s this:

You are already capable.

You’ve already accomplished so much, in your career, in your family, and in your life. But too often, we forget to acknowledge it.

Take a moment to reflect on how far you’ve come. You might be surprised by just how much you’re already “crushing it.”

And from that place, you can build whatever comes next.
