For so many women in accounting, the loneliness doesn’t always come from being alone. It comes from feeling unseen, unheard, and misunderstood in environments that often prioritize competition over collaboration. Whether you’re returning from maternity leave, trying to find your place in a male-dominated department, or launching your own firm, the emotional weight of isolation is real.
But here’s the truth: it doesn’t have to stay that way.
Why the Isolation Happens
From the start of their careers, many women learn to “toughen up” in order to succeed. The examples around them often model masculine energy and values. As Mayumi Young shared on the podcast, early in her career she saw the few women in leadership described as “men in skirts.” To climb the ladder, she felt the need to mirror that energy, disconnecting from her natural feminine strengths like intuition, empathy, and emotional intelligence.
This pressure to perform, not connect, creates environments where women often feel like they must keep their heads down and compete rather than collaborate. Add to that the real challenges of motherhood, shifting priorities, and a lack of supportive peers, and it’s no surprise that so many talented, capable women feel alone.
Finding the Right Community Starts with You
Reclaiming connection doesn’t start with finding the perfect group. It starts with tuning into what you need, and being intentional about seeking out spaces that feel safe, supportive, and aligned with your values.
Mayumi reminded us that our intuition is a powerful compass. If a room feels off, it probably is. If a community lifts you up, lean in. Trust your gut. Let your emotions guide you to the people and places that feel like home.
And most importantly, show up. Just joining a Facebook group or networking event won’t automatically build connection. You have to engage. Share your story. Ask a question. Support someone else. The more you give to your community, the more it gives back.
You Deserve to Be Seen and Supported
Connection is more than a nice-to-have. It’s a fundamental need. When women surround themselves with people who truly see them, understand them, and support them, everything shifts. Confidence grows. Clarity returns. And the path forward no longer feels so lonely.
If you’re feeling isolated, know this: you’re not alone in feeling alone. But you can choose something different. You can find your people. You can build your support system. And you can thrive in a career that honors both your ambition and your humanity.
